On May 11, 2023, my husband, Don Cash, perished in an avalanche on the Tibetan side of Mount Everest. He was 58 years old and had been climbing for over 20 years. Don was an experienced mountaineer who had climbed some of the world's highest peaks. He was also a loving husband, father, and friend.

Don's death was a devastating loss for me and our family. We are still trying to come to terms with what happened. I am sharing our story in the hope that it will help others who have lost loved ones in the mountains.

Don was a gentle and kind man who always put others before himself. He was also a strong and determined man who never gave up on his dreams. Don loved climbing mountains and he loved sharing his passion with others. He was a great mentor and friend to many people.

Don Cash Climbing Everest Fragile Edge: A Personal Portrait Of Loss On Everest

Don had been planning to climb Everest for many years. He had trained hard and was well-prepared for the expedition. He left for Nepal in April 2023 and began his ascent of Everest in early May. He reached the summit on May 10, 2023 and was descending the mountain when he was caught in an avalanche.

I was at home in Colorado when I received the news of Don's death. I was devastated. I couldn't believe that he was gone. I had lost my best friend, my soulmate, and the love of my life.

I flew to Nepal to be with Don's body and to bring him home. It was a difficult journey, but I was grateful to be able to say goodbye to him. Don's death has left a huge hole in my heart. I miss him every day. But I am also grateful for the time that we had together. Don was an amazing man and I will never forget him.

The Aftermath

In the aftermath of Don's death, I have found comfort in talking to other people who have lost loved ones in the mountains. I have also found comfort in writing about my experiences. I hope that by sharing our story, I can help others to heal from their own losses.

I have also found comfort in helping others to achieve their dreams of climbing Everest. I have established a foundation in Don's memory that provides financial assistance to climbers who are trying to reach the summit of Everest. I am also working with other organizations to improve safety on Everest.
