About the Solas Awards

The Solas Awards are prestigious travel writing awards that celebrate the best in travel literature. Named after the Celtic word for "light," the awards recognize travel writing that illuminates different cultures, inspires adventure, and promotes understanding of the world. The Solas Awards are given in a variety of categories, including adventure, cultural, and environmental travel writing.

The Solas Awards were founded in 2013 by the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW). SATW is a professional organization for travel writers, editors, and publishers. The Solas Awards are judged by a panel of experienced travel writers and editors.

• Hanya Yanagihara is an American novelist and essayist. Her book A Little Life won the Solas Award for Best Fiction in 2016.
• Ta-Nehisi Coates is an American journalist and author. His book Between the World and Me won the Solas Award for Best Non-Fiction in 2015.
• Jhumpa Lahiri is an American-Indian author. Her book The Namesake won the Solas Award for Best Fiction in 2004.
