Early Life and Rise to Power

King Kamehameha the Great, born Paiea Kamehameha, was born in 1758 in the Kohala district of the Big Island of Hawaii. He was the son of a high-ranking chief and a commoner woman. Kamehameha's early life was marked by poverty and hardship. He was raised by his uncle, who taught him the skills of a warrior and a leader.

Kamehameha began his rise to power in 1782, when he became the chief of his home district. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled warrior and a wise leader. In 1790, Kamehameha invaded the island of Maui and defeated the Maui chief, Kahekili. This victory gave Kamehameha control of Maui and Molokai.

Kamehameha died in 1819 at the age of 61. He was succeeded by his son, Liholiho, who took the throne name Kamehameha II.
