The Journey

Hyne's journey began in the Norwegian city of Trondheim. From there, he traveled by boat to the small town of Hammerfest, which is located just north of the Arctic Circle. From Hammerfest, Hyne continued his journey by dogsled, traveling through the snowy landscapes of Lapland. He visited the Sami people, who are the indigenous people of Lapland, and learned about their culture and way of life.

Hyne's journey was not without its challenges. He faced harsh weather conditions, including extreme cold and snowstorms. He also had to contend with the challenges of traveling through a remote and unfamiliar landscape. However, Hyne persevered and eventually reached his destination, the small town of Kautokeino.

The Northern Lights

Hyne's primary goal on his journey was to see the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon that occurs when charged particles from the sun interact with the Earth's magnetic field. The result is a colorful display of light that can be seen in the night sky. Hyne was fortunate to see the Northern Lights on several occasions during his journey. He described the experience as "a magnificent spectacle" and "one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen."

The People of Lapland

In addition to the Northern Lights, Hyne was also interested in the people of Lapland. He spent time with the Sami people and learned about their culture and way of life. The Sami people are a nomadic people who have traditionally relied on reindeer herding for their livelihood. Hyne was impressed by the Sami people's resilience and adaptability, and he wrote about their culture with great respect.

Charles John Cutcliffe Wright Hyne's journey to the Arctic Circle was a challenging but rewarding experience. He witnessed the Northern Lights, learned about the Sami people, and gained a new appreciation for the beauty and diversity of the Arctic landscape.

Hyne's book, "Through Arctic Lapland," is a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning more about the Arctic Circle. It is a well-written and informative account of a unique and unforgettable journey.
