Early Life and Education

Henry Herbert La Thangue was born on 19 January 1859 in Ditchling, Sussex, England. His father was a farmer and his mother was a schoolteacher. La Thangue showed an early interest in art and began taking lessons at the age of 14. He later attended the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he studied under Sir Frederick Leighton and Sir John Everett Millais.

Newlyn School

In 1884, La Thangue moved to Newlyn, Cornwall, where he joined a group of artists known as the Newlyn School. Other members of the Newlyn School included Stanhope Forbes, Frank Bramley, and Walter Langley.
