Modern art, a term commonly applied to the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, has its roots in the late 19th century. This period saw a break from traditional art forms and the emergence of new ideas and techniques that would shape the course of art for the next hundred years.

Impressionism

Impressionism, one of the earliest movements in modern art, emerged in France in the late 19th century. Impressionist painters sought to capture the fleeting effects of light and color, often painting outdoors and using loose brushstrokes. Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas were among the most famous Impressionist painters.

Post-Impressionism

Post-Impressionism, a movement that emerged in the late 19th century, built on the ideas of Impressionism but went beyond its focus on light and color. Post-Impressionist painters explored new ways of expressing emotions and ideas, often using bold colors and exaggerated forms. Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, and Georges Seurat were among the most famous Post-Impressionist painters.

Expressionism

Expressionism, a movement that emerged in the early 20th century, emphasized the expression of inner emotions and experiences. Expressionist artists used intense colors and distorted forms to convey their feelings, often creating powerful and emotional works. Edvard Munch, Wassily Kandinsky, and Franz Marc were among the most famous Expressionist painters.

Cubism

Cubism, a movement that emerged in the early 20th century, broke down objects into geometric shapes and depicted them from multiple perspectives. Cubist painters sought to represent the underlying structure of objects, rather than their appearance. Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Juan Gris were among the most famous Cubist painters.

Surrealism

Surrealism, a movement that emerged in the 1920s, explored the world of dreams and the subconscious. Surrealist artists used unexpected juxtapositions of images and objects to create works that were dreamlike and evocative. Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Joan Miró were among the most famous Surrealist painters.

Abstract Expressionism

Abstract Expressionism, a movement that emerged in the 1940s, emphasized the expression of emotions and ideas through abstract forms and colors. Abstract Expressionist painters often created works that were large and gestural, using drips, splatters, and other techniques to create a sense of energy and movement. Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko were among the most famous Abstract Expressionist painters.

Pop Art

Pop Art, a movement that emerged in the 1950s, drew inspiration from popular culture, such as advertising, comic books, and movies. Pop artists often used bright colors and bold images to create works that were both playful and critical. Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg were among the most famous Pop artists.

Op Art

Op Art, a movement that emerged in the 1960s, used optical illusions and patterns to create works that were visually striking and disorienting. Op artists often used black and white or high-contrast colors to create works that seemed to move or change when viewed from different angles. Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely, and Richard Anuszkiewicz were among the most famous Op artists.

Minimalism

Minimalism, a movement that emerged in the 1960s, emphasized simplicity and reduction. Minimalist artists often used basic geometric forms and neutral colors to create works that were spare and elegant.
