What You'll Need to Get Started

You don't need a lot of expensive supplies to get started with watercolor painting. Here's a basic list of what you'll need:

  • Watercolor paints
  • Watercolor paper
  • Brushes
  • Water container
  • Palette

Watercolor Paints

There are many different brands and types of watercolor paints available. For beginners, it's a good idea to start with a basic set of 12-18 colors. You can always add more colors to your collection as you gain experience.

Watercolor paints come in two main forms: tubes and pans. Tubes are more portable, but pans are more convenient to use. If you're not sure which type to choose, start with pans.

Watercolor Paper

Watercolor paper is specially designed to absorb water and paint without buckling or warping. It comes in a variety of weights and textures. For beginners, it's a good idea to start with a medium-weight paper that has a smooth surface.

Brushes

There are many different types of brushes that can be used for watercolor painting. For beginners, it's a good idea to start with a few basic brushes, such as a round brush, a flat brush, and a detail brush.

Natural hair brushes are more expensive than synthetic brushes, but they hold more water and paint and produce a smoother finish. Synthetic brushes are more durable and easier to clean, making them a good choice for beginners.

Water Container

You'll need a water container to hold clean water for rinsing your brushes and diluting your paints.

Palette

A palette is a surface on which you can mix your paints. You can use a plastic or ceramic palette, or you can use a disposable palette paper.

Getting Started

Once you have your supplies, you're ready to start painting! Here are a few tips for beginners:

  • Start with a simple subject. Don't try to paint a masterpiece on your first try. Start with something simple, like a flower or a landscape.
  • Use plenty of water. Watercolor is a water-based medium, so don't be afraid to use plenty of water. This will help your paints flow smoothly and create a more transparent effect.
  • Experiment with different brushstrokes. There are many different brushstrokes that can be used to create different effects in watercolor painting. Experiment with different strokes to see what you like best.
  • Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes when they're first starting out. The beauty of watercolor is that you can always lift off the paint and start over.

Fast and Fun Watercolor Techniques

Once you've mastered the basics, you can start experimenting with some fast and fun watercolor techniques:

Wet-on-Wet

Wet-on-wet is a technique in which you apply watercolor paint to wet paper. This creates a soft, dreamy effect. To try wet-on-wet, simply dip your brush in water and then into your paint. Then, apply the paint to wet paper.

Dry-on-Wet

Dry-on-wet is a technique in which you apply dry watercolor paint to wet paper. This creates a more textured effect. To try dry-on-wet, simply dip your brush in water and then into your paint. Then, dab the brush on a paper towel to remove excess water. Then, apply the paint to wet paper.

Washes

Washes are a technique in which you apply a thin layer of watercolor paint to paper. This creates a light, airy effect. To try washes, simply dip your brush in water and then into your paint. Then, apply the paint to paper in a thin, even layer.

Glazing

Glazing is a technique in which you apply multiple layers of watercolor paint to paper. This creates a rich, deep effect. To try glazing, simply apply a thin layer of watercolor paint to paper. Let the paint dry completely. Then, apply another thin layer of paint. Repeat this process until you're satisfied with the result.

Watercolor painting is a fun and versatile medium that can be enjoyed by artists of all levels. With a few basic supplies and a little practice, you can create beautiful watercolor paintings that will bring joy to you and others.
